When my sister Iris died of cancer it made me realize how much I wanted to tell her story and share her life with friends and family one more time.
Our family had prearranged for her Unitarian Minister to perform her service when the time came. But as life would have it her minister was on the other side of the country when Iris passed away. My brothers and sisters immediately voted me to handle it. When we met with the funeral director I was surprised to learn that I could officiate. We thought only ministers and funeral directors could do that kind of thing.
Everything about her service was a collaborative effort from writing her obituary, to choosing a photo for display, and working on the display board of photos. I also worked with my family to create an order of service including all the important elements like music and a time for sharing. I created a handout so everyone in the service knew what was next. I also put together a meaningful multi-media presentation to complete the service. There was laughter, there were tears, there were stories many didn’t know. It was beautiful.
Afterwards many people came forward to say how wonderful and different the service had been. One woman wanted to “book me in advance” for her service. I mentioned this to the funeral director who suggested I take training to become a Certified Celebrant. I took the training and opened my business Oceanside Celebrant Services. It’s my way of helping others find words during their time of loss.
